Join SeaKeepers in Australia: Participate in a Citizen Science Expedition
A message from our friends at the International SeaKeepers Society, directed to all marina guests and vessels here in, or travelling to, the Whitsundays!
Dear SeaKeepers friend,
Calling all vessels in or traveling to Whitsundays!
The International SeaKeepers Society (SeaKeepers) has a new Citizen Science opportunity to help monitor whales through underwater sound recordings and visual sightings.
Project Background
Researchers are launching the first large-scale acoustic monitoring project across Australia’s east coast to better understand how increasing human activity in the ocean is affecting marine life. By recording and analysing whale sounds, and visual sightings, the team can track migration routes, identify critical habitats, and gain insight into changes in ocean ecosystems, as whales act as key indicators of ocean health. Using a network of small hydrophones the project aims to map marine biodiversity and support global conservation efforts, while also inviting citizen scientists to contribute to real-world research.
